welcome

The Samoan Sports Association is an Auckland based not-for-profit organisation recognising outstanding contributions made by Samoans within New Zealand sport. The Association’s primary aims are to promote a healthy lifestyle through active participation in sport and leisure for the Samoan community in New Zealand by celebrating the achievements of our elite athletes and providing financial assistance through scholarships to future generations.

youth scholarships

The Samoan Sports Association Youth Scholarships aim to promote healthy lifestyles for Samoan youth in New Zealand through education. Emerging talent of young people is becoming more prevalent and in more diverse sporting arenas.

Since 2003, the Association has awarded Youth Scholarships, honouring our young people and their achievements and supporting their drive for excellence. To date more than 135 junior sportsmen and women have received scholarships totaling more than $100,000.

Huge response to Youth Scholarships - announcement and event postponed

We have received an overwhelming number of applications for our 2011 Youth Scholarships. Due to this great response, the winners’ announcement has been postponed and the awards ceremony will now be held on 2 February 2012. This allows our judging panel more time to go through the applications and pick their winners.

samoan sports awards

Widely acknowledged as a key annual event within the Samoan community, the Samoan Sports Awards have been held every year since 1997, with the inaugural Supreme Award going to Beatrice Faumuina, New Zealand’s first gold medallist at the World Track and Field Championships by winning the women’s discus at Athens, Greece.

Award winners and finalists, which include David Tua, Tana Umaga, Ross Taylor, Sonny Bill Williams and Maria Tutaia, reflect the continuing high calibre of Samoan athletes. But those in all aspects of sport are recognised with awards going to outstanding young athletes, coaches, teams, referees, administrators and a Pacific Sports Person Award, which has been won by Olympic and multi world champion Valerie Adams.

The awards have been held every year since 1997 and attract an audience of more than 500,000 TV viewers, a combined international online audience of over 1 million viewers with another 500,000 listeners across NZ and Samoa via radio broadcast.
